Standard Foam Cervical Collar

The easy-to-fit Standard Foam Cervical Collar uses medium-density foam and fits comfortably around the neck, helping users recover and deal with neck problems such as neck pain, herniated discs, arthritis, spondylitis, spondylosis and whiplash. Its cushioning, soft and reliable construction makes it a highly popular collar, especially as it is suitable for use through the night if you struggle to sleep because of neck pain.

What's Included?

  • 1 x Foam Collar
  • 1 x Set of User Instructions

Which Size Foam Collar Should I Choose?

The Standard Foam Collar is available in five different sizes. To find the correct one for you, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Using a flat tape measure, measure the circumference of your neck across the "Adam's apple" area
  2. Add two inches (5cm) onto this measurement
  3. Select the collar length for you. For example, if your neck measures 16", select a size Medium.

How to measure your neck correctly

Size Collar Length
Extra Small 38cm (15")
Small 43cm (17")
Medium 46cm (18")
Large 51cm (20")
Extra Large 59cm (22")
XX-Large 61cm (24")

Why Am I Adding Two Inches to My Measurement?

If your neck has a circumference of 16", the correct size Standard Neck Collar for you would be a medium. Two inches is the necessary room required to fit the collar around your neck without restricting airflow or causing circulatory issues.

What If My Measurement Falls Between Sizes?

If you are close to a sizing boundary, selecting the smaller option could restrict breathing. If your measurement falls between sizes (for example, if your neck measures 15.5") our product experts recommend selecting the larger size Cervical Collar for an optimum fit.

What Depth Option Is Best for Me?

To find the correct depth for you, straighten your head and measure the length between the edge of your chin and the top of your sternum as shown in the image below. If you are having trouble locating your sternum, follow your collar bones to the centre of your chest and measure from the point at which they meet.

This measurement should be taken "as the crow flies" from one point to the other without running the tape measure down along the chin and neck.

How to correctly measure your neck

Once you have your measurement, please select the correct option from the two options below:

Depth Measurement Collar Depth
Up to 6.4cm 6.4cm
Between 6.5cm and 9cm 9cm
Over 9cm N/A

Different Depth Options

For more serious neck injuries such as whiplash or a herniated disc, we would recommend using the slightly thicker collar as this can provide more support to your neck while restricting movement a little further. The slightly thinner option is best suited to users who suffer from general neck pain, arthritis and other problems associated with ageing.

I'm Concerned About the Tightness of My Collar...

If you correctly follow the sizing information and guidance above, you will receive a brace that works and treats your condition correctly. If you are overly concerned about the tightness of your brace, we recommend selecting one size larger than your measurement instructs.

We do not recommend doing this however, as this can compromise the correct level of support required.

Who Should Use the Standard Foam Cervical Collar?

The Standard Foam Cervical Collar is well suited to anyone who suffers from neck pain, a variety of neck conditions and suffers to get to sleep because of neck pain and neck discomfort. As the Cervical Collar can support and hold your neck in a position that forces recovery, it is well suited to a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Whiplash
  • Cervical spondylitis
  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Herniated cervical disc
  • General neck pain
  • Difficulty sleeping because of neck pain

Please bear in mind that the Standard Foam Collar is extremely versatile and is suitable for treating a wide range of different neck problems.

How Do You Fit the Cervical Collar?

The Cervical Collar is extremely easy to fit, featuring a simple touch and close fastening that can be fit by anyone including the person wearing the collar. The fastening uses Velcro, meaning that once secure it will not come undone during use. Furthermore, the use of Velcro ensures that you can fasten the collar from behind without having to see the collar yourself.

Detailed Fitting Instructions

  1. Choose the correct size taking care to follow our sizing guidance above
  2. Open the hook and loop strap at the back of the collar
  3. Find the contoured part of the collar and place this area under the patient's chin
  4. Hold the collar in place and gently wrap the collar around the patient's neck
  5. Securely fasten the hook and loop attachments at the back of the neck
  6. Check that the collar is not restricting circulation, breathing or airflow

How Should a Correctly Fitted Cervical Collar Feel?

Provided you have correctly followed our sizing guidance above, we recommend wearing your collar as tight as is comfortable without restricting airflow or causing injury. A tight, snug fit ensures the brace is doing its job as intended by providing stability and security to the affected area.

Why Should I Trust the Cervical Collar?

The Standard Cervical Collar may not look like much. However its simple design has won the hearts of our customers, with the majority claiming fast and comfortable pain relief. Its simple design works in its favour, well suited for keeping the neck raised in a specific position without causing unnecessary stress.

Can it be Used While Sleeping?

The major benefit of the Standard Cervical Collar is that it can be used while sleeping, which is ideal for users who both struggle to sleep because of neck pain, and users who need to keep their neck supported while they are asleep. Its comfortable and versatile design is actually comfortable to use while you sleep, in part because it is covered in 100% cotton stockinette cushions your neck through the night.

What Does the Standard Foam Collar Feel Like to Wear?

As mentioned above the Standard Foam Cervical Collar is covered in 100% cotton stockinette, making it feel smooth and comfortable on the neck. Its foam interior is extremely comfortable around the neck and can support your neck without you feeling like there's something uncomfortable surrounding it. It's so effective at dealing with neck pain, users have reported that headaches caused by neck pain have been completely relieved.

How Soft is the Foam Collar to Touch?

It is designed using medium density foam, meaning that the material has a lot of give and will bend easily when you can squeeze it in your hands. The foam is surrounded by cotton meaning that the collar is incredibly soft on your skin. Due to how soft it is, you can bend your neck to the side and downwards and the collar will provide support to your neck, and contour to the natural shape of your body.

Is the Foam Collar Suitable for Travel?

If you suffer from neck pain or need neck support, then the Standard Foam Collar is perfect for travelling with. Its trustworthy Velcro fastening will not come undone during use, so the chances of you losing the collar are reduced. However if you are expecting to spend a long period of time on a bus, train or plane, then we would recommend having a quick look at our Travel Pillows category.

Will it Get Hot During Summer?

During summer, ordinary braces, supports and bandages can be particularly uncomfortable, especially if you start to sweat and they begin to chafe. Thankfully, the Foam Cervical Collar is highly breathable, which means that the collar can stay fairly cool even if you yourself are sweating. The breathable fabric is comfortable during hot days, perfect for allowing you to make the most of summer.

How Much Will I Be Able to Move My Head?

The Cervical Collar is designed to allow you to move your head while supporting your neck. The slightly deeper option prevents more movement, however you should still be able to move your head from side to side and up and down.

What is the Foam Cervical Collar Made From?

The Foam Cervical Collar is designed using medium-density foam, something that can support and cushion your neck while still allowing enough movement to get by. It is completely covered in cotton stockinette, a comfortable material that feels soft during use. The two materials are ideal for keeping comfortable while recovering from injuries.

Can I Wash the Cervical Collar?

We would recommend not machine washing or tumble drying the Cervical Collar is this could damage the design. However it is suitable for hand washing should you wish to clean the collar for hygiene purposes.

A very well made collar that arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. It was easy to find what I was looking for on the website. My only advice would be to order a bigger size if your measurement comes up in the middle of two sizes.

The foam material that it's made from is far to stiff, it doesn't fit under the chin properly, lasted a couple of minutes before I had to rip it of it was so uncomfortable to wear. .

Response:

Hi Neil,

Thanks for taking the time to leave us your thoughts.

Unfortunately, the stiffness of the foam is to ensure that the support retains it's support over a longer period of use. I'm sorry that you found this feature to be uncomfortable.

Thanks again for your review.

Best wishes,

Alex at MedicalSupplies.co.uk

Hi David,

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review with us. We really appreciate customer feedback on all our products as it helps us better tailor our recommendations in the future!

With regards to sizing, the margins between options with the Standard Foam Cervical Collar are incredibly thin, hence why we are so detailed with our sizing guidance. If your Cervical Collar feels snug and provides support underneath the chin, it's positioned correctly.

We're really glad your purchase has helped with sleep and that it's proving effective when worn at night. We hope this continues and that we hear from you again in the near future.

Kind regards,

Seth at MedicalSupplies.co.uk.

Maybe like me you associate a Cervical collar with the woman in the pharmacy on Doc Martin, and really had no intention of wearing one yourself... All I can say is what a incredible relief it was to my poor sore neck and I like think helped it heal and rest faster having this support on...

Great Neck Brace
16 February 2023  |  Chrissie

I have generalised osteoarthritis which is now in my neck. In the evenings the pain is awful. So I thought a neck brace would help.
This neck brace is comfortable to wear and gives me much pain relief.
I ordered two, which were delivered on time and were well packed.
I highly recommend.
Many thanks.

21 November 2022  |  Sophie

The advise reference allowing 5cm more on the length is good but not strong enough as I considered it but thought it would be far too long and I didn't want the collar to double up at the back. I allowed 3cm that proven to be not enough round the neck.
Otherwise product good and as comfortable as it can be not being the best size for my unfortunate very short and very wide neck. Thank you

Response:

Hi Sophie,

Thanks for getting in touch. We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review with us.

With regard to sizing guidance, as you say the reason we advise adding 5cm (2") on to your measurement is to prevent any airflow restriction or breathing interference. Without being able to see an individual in person to take exact measurements at multiple points, it's difficult to get a tailored fit every time, hence why we instruct customers to take a measurement and add 5cm on to it.

We hope this information helps and that we hear from you again in the near future.

Kind regards,

Seth at MedicalSupplies.co.uk
