Why Do I Need a Dynamic Air Mattress?

Dynamic, or alternating (air) mattresses are typically for more severe cases of pressure ulcers. However, there are a number of other reasons why someone might opt for this type of mattress:

  • Pressure Ulcer Treatment: Dynamic air mattresses work by directing airflow throughout the mattress, redistributing pressure across the patient's body to alleviate excess weight in ulcerated areas. Over time with use of a dynamic air mattress, you will start to see the size and severity of pressure ulcers decrease.
  • Pressure Ulcer Prevention: In redistributing the patient's weight, these mattresses significantly reduce likelihood of repeat ulceration. Pressure ulcers are caused by excess weight in vulnerable parts of the body (for example, the ankles are susceptible to ulceration due to minimal protective fat and tissue). However, with a dynamic air mattress, there is no possibility of pressure build up due to continual air circulation, keeping patients who are bedridden for extensive periods safe.
  • Pain Relief: An increase in airflow makes the patient feel weightless in bed, and this reduction in pressure treats, prevents and alleviates symptoms of ulceration. In the same way that pressing on an open wound for hours on end would hurt, the same is true for bed sores. Continual airflow of a dynamic air mattress eliminates this pain and discomfort which is essential for paint wellbeing - particularly if they are bedridden all day and night.
  • Moisture and Airflow Control: Being bedridden significantly compromises patient hygiene through an increase in sweat and other body fluids. This is not only uncomfortable for the patient, but it often leads to shearing and friction, which can lead to dangerous infections and diseases. Dynamic air mattresses eliminate this as a possibility through pressure reduction, constant airflow and microclimates, which help to keep skin cool and friction-free.
  • Comfort: Suffering from pressure ulcers can severely affect the physical and mental wellbeing of patients - particularly if they are bedridden most, or all, hours of the day. In alleviating these issues, dynamic air mattresses promote patient wellbeing directly and effectively, making them ideal for use in professional and personal environments. Elimination of pressure ulcers also accelerates patient healing times from any other ailments they might have in addition to being bedridden, for better health more generally.
  • Enhanced Mobility: Whether patients are new to being bedridden (perhaps post surgery, or injury), or whether they are in palliative or full-time bed rest, a dynamic mattress increases a patient's mobility. Dynamic air mattresses typically allow the patient to change their head, foot, and body positioning, in addition to controlling the airflow throughout the mattress. This increases their mobility in a way that is gently and non-obtrusive.
  • Independence: Predominantly remote controlled, dynamic air mattresses allow patients and their carers to customise treatment according to their needs. This allows patients to adjust settings according to whatever they need in the best way to alleviate symptoms, which betters their health more generally. Physically, this allows for a more bespoke treatment plan, and mentally, this returns control to patients lacking in physical autonomy over themselves and their condition.

What Other Mattresses are Available?

For an alternative but very similar style of pressure relief mattress with more air cells, check out the link below:

We also have a range of Pressure Relief Mattresses available:

15.5cm Therapeutic Air Cells

The Axtair Automorpho Axensor is fitted with 15.5cm therapeutic air cells which work with 3 therapeutic zones:

  1. 2 static air cells located in the head area
  2. 12 alternating air cells located in the sacrum area
  3. 4 independent heel relief air cells

These features, combined with the included Winncare Axtair Automorpho Axensor pump, gives patients the option to customise their treatments completely. This allows patients and carers to create the optimal supine position, guaranteeing better sleep and general quality of life. The selective deflation of air cells prevents cutaneous injuries and facilitates bronchial secretions for mechanically ventilated patients, making this product suitable for most bedbound patients.
