Wellell Domus Auto Bariatric Alternating Pressure Mattress

Looking after bariatric patients comes with its own set of difficulties, but with the Wellell Domus Auto Bariatric Alternating Pressure Mattress effective pressure care doesn't have to be one of them. With mobile capabilities for up to 8 hours, and automatic adjustment to patient weight, this easy-to-use alternating air therapy system is ideal for residential care environments, and during post-acute care scenarios.

Please note: Wellell, formerly known as Apex, are currently rebranding their ranges. During this transition, some products may still feature the Apex branding.

What's Included?

  • 1 x Pressure Relief Mattress With Cover
  • 1 x Control Pump
  • 1 x Quick Connector Cap

Please note: You will need to provide your own bed frame to use with this pressure relief unit.

How Does This Bariatric Air Mattress Work?

Pressure relief mattresses rely on air cells which inflate and deflate in alteration. This alternation within the cells function to reduce or increase pressure in various areas of the mattress in regular cycles, offering consistent pressure redistribution. Ensuring that pressure is not concentrated in one area of the user's body reduces the risk of the development of pressure sores, and offers comfort to those who already have them.

The cells in an alternating air pressure therapy unit are powered by a pump. Alternation patterns can generally be adjusted via the pump, and are decided based on the weight and positioning of the mattress user. With this particular Domus Mattress system the maximum user weight is 300kg, making it suitable for bariatric patients. For the Domus Auto series, this adjustment is automatic.

Who Can Use This Pressure Relief System?

The Domus Auto Bariatric unit is suitable for patients who are at a medium-to-high risk of developing pressure sores, such as those who are bedridden due to long-term illnesses. This system is designed to work for bariatric patients, ensuring a comfortable experience for a wider range of patients.

This easy-to-use pressure relief unit is perfect for use in residential care environments. It is also ideal for use during post-acute care scenarios to ensure effective pressure relief while the patient is rehabilitated following illness or injury.

What Is the Difference Between This And Other Domus Relief Systems?

The Domus Auto Bariatric is designed for ease-of-use and effective care of larger patients. While it shares some features with other mattresses in the series, it is the best choice for use with bariatric patients to ensure maximum comfort and proper pressure relief therapy is delivered.

The Wellell Domus Auto shares a wide range of similar features, including automatic pressure adjustment according to patient weight and a water-resistant nylon cover. The key difference between these is the maximum patient weight capability, which is 200kg for the Domus Auto and 350kg for the Domus Auto Bariatric.

Other automatic Wellell Domus systems include the Domus 4, which differs from the Domus Auto with its low air loss feature.  The low air loss feature ensures optimal comfort for patients by ensuring that air cells stay firm even after power failures, preventing them from sinking to the bottom of the mattress. The Domus 3 includes no automatic features, so therapy adjustment to patient weight is done using a simply designed dial on the pump.

What Features Are Included On the Pump Attachment?

With this mattress system is included a pump, which is used to inflate the mattress to control the alternating inflation and deflation of the air cells. Though adjustment to patient weight is automatic, there are a range of therapy delivery methods to choose from on the pump. These include:

  • Alternating Therapy: Air cells are alternately inflated and deflated for continuous pressure redistribution in ten-minute cycles
  • Continuous Low Pressure (CLP): Provides a static surface with lower pressure for heightened patient comfort
  • Max Firm: Offers a firm static surface for nursing procedures, and automatically returns to alternating mode after 20minutes
  • Seat Inflation: Enables pressure adjustment to suit seated positions, and can be used alongside the alternating or CLP feature

Is the Provided Cover the Best Choice For This System?

Along with the Domus Auto Bariatric Pressure Relief System, you will receive a 4-way stretch mattress cover. This comfortable, sheet cover is ideal for use with this mattress, and is designed with following handy features:

  • Low friction surface
  • Vapour permeable for material breathability and a good level of air flow to minimise sweating
  • Water resistant to help prevent the build-up of sweat
  • Flame resistant for maximum user safety
  • Biocompatible design to prevent irritation of the skin
  • 360° zipper and welded seams for easy removal and complete mattress protection

Can the Domus Auto Bariatric Mattress Be Used On Mobile Beds?

Using the quick connector cap, which should be connected to both the mattress and the provided pump, it is possible to use this mattress system while the plug is disconnected from the mains power source. The connector cap can help to seal the mattress for patient transportation, and can enable continuous mobile usage for up to 8 hours.

Does This System Feature Any Alarms or Alerts?

There are three visual and audible alerts included with this mattress system. These are:

  • Low Pressure: Alerts the carer to decreasing pressure levels while the mattress is in use
  • Power Failure: Alerts the carer to losses of power which may affect the delivery of pressure therapy
  • Technical Support: Alerts carers to issues with the mattress which need proper technical support to manage
