This revised chart features a slight change in difficulty score for each letter, as well as a new arrangement of the letters which sees each letter appear in each position at least once.

What Is the Function of This ETDRS LogMAR Chart?

An ETDRS Chart, also known as a logMAR chart, is a standardised visual acuity testing chart with fourteen lines of 5 Sloan optotype letters, decreasing in size towards the bottom of the chart. These charts are used to examine vision and visual acuity by assessing how well patients are able to see and read the smaller letters.

What Does the Chart Being Revised Mean?

There is a slight change in the difficulty score for each of the Sloan letters in the revised charts. These revised scores derive from the visual acuity examinations of the 7420 eyes during the ETDRS study in which this specific type of logMAR chart was developed. These revisions also involved the arrangement of the letters being changed to help prevent patients from memorising them and skewing their assessment results.

Revised charts, including this model, are not suitable for use in studies sponsored by the American National Eye Institute.
